❝ IHEAL is celebrating its 70th anniversary. So, for this 2024 edition of the Latin American and Caribbean Weeks, we are pleased to invite you to the concert-conference “Raúl Barboza: Stories of a Latin American musician”, with the accordionist Raúl Barboza and the anthropologist Jimena Ponce de Leon.

Ambassador of litoraleña music in France, Raúl Barboza has brought the traditional chamamé of Corrientes into dialogue with other musical genres since his arrival in Paris in 1987. Born in Buenos Aires, he quickly stood out for his ease on the accordion and joined the company of Ariel Ramirez, with whom he recorded the famous Misa Criolla.

Navigating between instrumental music and song, Raúl Barboza is a true reference for the accordion, recording more than 30 albums around the world, from Argentina to Japan. His accordion accompanies the voices of Mercedes Sosa, Cesária Évora and Teresa Parodi, making tango shine in Paris at the famous Trottoirs de Buenos Aires, recommended by Astor Piazzola. Crossing the boundaries between Latin American and French music, he recorded Chamamémusette with Francis Varis (France) and Zé Luis Nascimento (Brazil) where the mixture of traditional artistic languages is highlighted.

This event is part of the IHEAL Musical Migrations cycle, initiated in 2023 with the concert-conference by Omar Espinosa and Esteban Buch.

Jimena Ponce de León, anthropologist, is a lecturer at the Nacional Tres de Febrero University (Argentina), specializing in popular music from Argentina. ❞
