Inaugural conference

"For a history of international relations from Latin America"

The organizers of this conference started from an observation: the Latin Americas are still too little present in works on the history of international relations in France and Latin American historiography on this subject is little known. At the same time, the French school of history of international relations as it has developed since the pioneering reflections of Pierre Renouvin and Jean-Baptiste Duroselle is little mobilized in the Latin Americas, and even less in the United States. At the crossroads of European, Latin American and American research, IHEAL-CREDA can in this regard, notably through this conference, serve as a mediator, a conduit between these different historiographies and work towards their cross-fertilization.

The issue is twofold.

On the one hand, it is a matter of raising awareness of the place and role of Latin America in the making of the international (ideas, norms, representations, practices) in the 20th and 20th centuries by connecting historiographies which do not dialogue enough.

But the objective is also, on the other hand, to think about the history of international relations from Latin America in such a way as to propose an alternative cartography of "centers" and "peripheries", to reconsider certain periodizations, to update other connections and networks than those which are usually analized. In other words, to consider the epistemological and heuristic issues of adopting a Latin American/Latin Americanist point of view on international relations.

Without giving Latin America and the Caribbean an artificial centrality, we wish to show that the latter can be considered as a crossroads of circulation fully participating in the construction and developments of the world order since the end of the 19th century until these days. As much as an "equal parts" history in terms of sources and bibliographical references, it is a fully international and connected history, within which the Latin Americas are not reduced to an "extreme West", that this conference calls for.
